When Should You Replace a Cracked Window Instead of Repairing It?

You noticed it three days ago — a thin line running from the lower corner, quiet enough that you almost thought it had always been there. Now it's longer. That's the moment most people pick up the phone.

The repair-or-replace question sounds simple until you're standing in front of the glass. The answer depends on what kind of crack you have, where it sits, and what type of window you're dealing with. Get it right and you spend $150–$400 on a glass unit swap. Get it wrong and you're back in the same spot six months later.

What Type of Crack You're Actually Looking At

Pressure cracks curve across the pane without a clear starting point at an edge or center. These form when a window was installed with uneven pressure on the frame, or when the frame has since shifted. The glass is being squeezed unevenly, and eventually it gives. Two Checks You Can Do Before Calling Anyone

You don't need tools for either of these.

The fingernail drag test:

Hold your fingernail at a 90-degree angle to the crack and drag it slowly across, like you're scratching a record. If your nail catches on a raised lip — if you can feel one side sitting higher than the other — the crack has opened up. It's no longer a tight surface line; it's a structural gap. That glass won't stay put. If your nail slides across smoothly without catching, the crack is still closed and tight, which changes the math.

The 2-inch edge rule:

Look at where the crack starts or ends relative to the frame. If any part of the crack comes within 2 inches of the edge, replace it. When Repair Is Actually Viable

Honest answer: not often. But it's not never.

A crack longer than 6 inches on single-pane glass, or any crack on a double-pane unit, is beyond repair territory. Resin won't bond across a running crack with any structural effect. The glass needs to come out.

But there is a narrower version of "repair" that's worth understanding. When a double-pane window is cracked, the instinct is often to replace the entire window — frame, sash, hardware, everything. That's usually not necessary. What most situations call for is replacing the insulated glass unit (IGU), which is the sealed two-pane assembly that drops into the existing frame. The frame stays. The IGU swaps out. That's significantly less expensive and faster than a full window replacement. A glazier can confirm whether your frame is in good enough condition to hold a new unit.

What's Different About Double-Pane Windows

Single-pane glass gives you one variable: the glass itself. Double-pane windows add a second failure mode — the seal.

The IGU is two panes of glass separated by a spacer bar, with desiccant inside to absorb moisture, all sealed at the edges. When that seal fails, you get foggy glass between the panes — moisture that's gotten inside and can't get out. That's not a crack problem. That's an IGU failure, and no amount of work to the outer surface fixes it. The unit needs to come out.

Taping over a crack on the outer pane of a double-pane window and call it handled. It never holds. The thermal movement between the two panes works on that crack continuously, and tape or resin on the exterior doesn't address what's happening structurally between the layers.

When a double-pane window is cracked, assume IGU replacement until a glazier says otherwise.

Why Heat Makes This Decision More Urgent

Glass expands when it heats up. A standard float glass pane expands roughly 8 to 9 millimeters per linear meter across its full temperature range. That's not nothing — especially on windows with long horizontal spans.

But the bigger issue is the rate of change. On a west-facing window, glass surface temperatures can spike over 120°F in summer afternoon sun, then drop 50°F or more after sunset. The frame heats and cools at a different rate than the glass. That differential puts the pane under repeated tension and compression cycles, and every cycle applies stress at the crack tip.

A crack that would stay stable for months in a mild climate can propagate 3 to 4 inches in a single hot day under those conditions. The stress crack that looks manageable in the morning may have grown by the time you get home from work.

If a crack has survived three full seasons without growing, that's a meaningful data point. If you're looking at a crack that's changed in the last few weeks — especially after a heat wave — that's a crack that's actively moving.

What Proper Glass Replacement Actually Involves

Some glaziers will quote you a glass-only swap without looking at the frame condition. That's a mistake when the crack pattern suggests pressure or installation issues.

The right approach starts by checking the frame. Look for gaps at the corners. Check whether the window operates smoothly — sticking is a sign of frame movement. Then look at the glazing stops, the strips holding the glass in place. If the glazing putty has shrunk away from the glass, or the stops are warped, that needs addressing before the new glass goes in.

For single-pane replacement, the glazier removes the old pane, cleans the rabbet (the channel the glass sits in), and applies new glazing compound. The new glass goes in with a 1/8-inch gap on all sides — the correct tolerance for thermal movement. Undersized clearance is a common installation error that causes stress cracks within the first year.

For IGU replacement, the process is similar but requires ordering the exact unit size and matching the original glass spec — thickness, Low-E coating, gas fill if applicable. A good glazier measures twice before ordering. The unit is sealed back into the frame with proper setting blocks at the sill to carry the weight of the glass without putting edge stress on it.

Cheap workarounds — silicone squeezed into a crack, plastic window film over a broken pane — don't restore the structural integrity of the glass. They buy time in an emergency, nothing more.
